Christmas Opportunity for Children in Need

We have recently joined with a ministry called Care Portal. The Care Portal brings the needs of hurting children and families in our community to our attention. Child Welfare workers uncover the needs. The Care Portal makes local churches aware, giving us a timely, non-threatening invitation and opportunity to respond to these needs, and a connection opportunity with these families. We will be sharing more about Care Portal in the coming year. Veronica Wilkerson has agreed to serve as our team leader for this ministry.

Care Portal has extended an invitation to participate in a Christmas ministry called “The Gift of Hope.” This is a partnership between local churches, the Terrell Police Department, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department, child advocacy attorneys, the Department of Family Protective Services Faith Based Programs, and Harvest Family Life. The objective is to restore a child’s faith in the community that is committed to protecting them during the removal from their families during the holiday season due to abuse and/or neglect.

Police & sheriff officers will take these children shopping at Walmart on Saturday, December 23rd (5:30-6:30 pm), using Visa gift cards donated by members of the various partners. The intent is to develop respect among the children, rather than fear, of those who have taken the oath to protect and serve their communities. They will then go to Cornerstone Baptist Church to wrap the gifts with the kids and have dinner provided by Whataburger.

If you’d like to participate, you can donate through the church office toward all or part of a $100 Visa gift card that will be used for each child by the police/sheriff officers during their shopping time with these kids. Please note your gifts as “Care Portal” to help us ensure it is applied to this ministry effort. Gifts must be received by Sunday, December 17 for us to get the cards delivered by Dec. 18. You may also join them for the time of gift wrapping and dinner at Cornerstone beginning at 6:30 pm to have an opportunity to meet and visit with these families and invite them to our church activities. If you’d like to participate in this time, please let Veronica or the church office know so we can help them with meal headcount planning.

The FBC group is a place where we can share information with all of our church family. This group primarily involves church staff communicating with the body. Deeper community best develops in the various other groups that make up The City for FBC. We encourage you to join a few and engage.
